20 Fun Activities for Students after Schools at Home

We are all aware of the pandemic all over the world which demands social distancing as the only cure for it. Staying at home for a few weeks is the one medicine that can keep us safe and curb the disease from spreading. Social distancing is a well-known terminology these days that demands to distance oneself from people around including relatives, friends, neighbors. Due to the government imposing lockdown to encourage social distancing, schools and colleges are shut down.

Children are getting bored at home, parents might be thinking of various ways to keep their children occupied with some productive and fun activities. It can be pretty difficult for parents to make their children stay at home as it is not like any of their summer vacations wherein their children can go and play outdoor games morning and evening. Outdoor games would keep them happy and fit, but as we all know in this worldwide scenario, we can’t afford to take the risk of sending our children outside to play. So, let’s try to be a child again and try to figure out some of the productive and fun activities for children at home.

Watching television, surfing the internet, and playing games on the internet are already very popular among children. But don’t you think our children need some exciting activities to keep them happy and healthy? So when they get back to their friends they would have various fun activities to discuss with each other.

But before that let us discuss the role of parents:

  • Schedule a timetable for your child, emphasizing daily working activities for them so that they know how to productively utilize their time.
  • Provide them with a healthy and positive environment as the news all around is depressing.
  • Help them in coping up with their basics like improving their grammar and vocabulary, handwriting practice, mental mathematics, etc.
  • This is the best period when you can talk with your child, so talk to them and know what’s going on in their lives and mentor them.

1) Treasure hunt

This is the best time to spend time with your children. Treasure Hunt is one of the exciting family bonding games. It’s a game wherein you make a list of 10 to 20 things in 2 chits of paper and divide your family into 2 teams. The team that finds of maximum things or all the things mentioned in the list before another team, team wins.

2) Virtual Dance Party

Wear your dancing shoes, switch on your devices, and have a web conference with your children’s friends. Also, you can organize a game for them called as “Freeze Dance”. In this game, you can be the DJ and be in control of the music. When the music starts children will start dancing, but watch out! As soon as the music stops, Freeze!

3) Go on an Alphabet Scavenger hunt

Make sheets have alphabets and let your child find items that begin with each letter.

4) Play “The floor is lava”

The ones who miss their fun activity for kindergarten. Decide which furniture is okay to jump on and considered safe. Set a timer and the first person who yells, “The floor is lava.” All other players will get to the “safe” spot before time runs out.

5) Play I Spy Cleanup

Set a timer to put away as many items as possible till the clock runs out. Call out an item for your child to race towards, grab, and place it well.

6) Plant a Garden

Do you remember your childhood? When your father used to water flowers we used to learn in school about different types of beautiful flowers and plants, which made us inquisitive to ask our fathers how such pretty flowers develop.

In this digitalization era, playing online games occupies our children and they fail to understand and learn the beauty of nature. So, let’s teach them Gardening! Get gardening equipment and tools, fertilizers, watering containers etc., and teach your children the art of planting.

7) DIYs (Do it Yourself)

The best indoor games for our students are the DIYs taught to them. Also, you can teach them some from YouTube videos or ask them to make. Quilling, origami, clay making, T-shirt painting, and scrapbook/album making are some of the DIYs.

8) Let’s Sing with the Chord!

Children can learn to play some musical instruments like Guitar, Piano, Casio, etc. Also, they can set their dancing routine on YouTube. Learning Zumba could also be a good idea to make them exercise and keep them healthy.

9) Board Games

Scrabble, Chinese Checker, Chess, Monopoly, and The Game of Life are some of the few board games that are loved among children.

12) Create a Safe Physical Activity Space

If you have an open space like a veranda or a balcony, just take a mattress and place it on the floor for physical activities like wrestling or gymnastics.

13) Let’s Write Some Letters for our Loved Ones

Get stamps, envelopes and papers and write letter to your loved ones. The traditional way of writing letters would be a fun way to connect rather than modern emails.

14) Bake Together

Why not teach them cooking? Baking and decorating chocolates and cakes would definitely help them in reducing their stress. This activity would develop their interest to stay at home wherein they would not feel like wandering outside their house wherein this epidemic is all over. This can be one of the best bonding activities for a family.

Play a Flashcard Hide-and-SeekFor children who are young, you can play this game by hiding flashcards of letters and numbers anywhere in the house and tell them to find it in a specified time.

For teenagers, you can hide words or mathematics fact flashcards and let them tell you the answer when they find them.

16) Play Simon Says

A very popular game wherein a person plays the role of a leader, named Simon, and gives out commands. For example, “Simon Says run in place! Simon says lay down on the floor” which players have to follow. Failing to say “Simon says” and yet if players follow then they would be out of the game.

17) Do a “Deck of Cards” Workout!

Assign each shape a different exercise. For example, Hearts = running in place, Spades = push-ups, Diamond = jumping jacks, and Clubs = sit-ups. Take turns by flipping cards and doing the exercise according to the card fetched.

18) Play Charades

On pieces of paper, write down phrases or words to act out. Take turns in
pulling out a single piece of paper out of the container and have fun acting out the description.

19) Create an Indoor “Camp Out”

Pack some sandwiches grab some beverages and set a tent in your house balcony, terrace or veranda. Let your children set up the tent and list all the essentials required for camping. You can guide them if they miss out on any items in the list.

20) Trash Art

Let your children paint from recycled material. They love painting random objects and making beautiful creations from them.
